Schwab Charitable operates as an independent charity, but is closely affiliated with and enjoys the support of Charles Schwab & Co, including contractual agreements to provide a variety of services. This position will be an employee of Charles Schwab & Co. and will be subject to its human resources and risk policies and procedures, but will report to and be accountable to Schwab Charitable for day-to-day activities.


What you are good at

The Managing Director of Risk & Compliance Management is a working manager that leads and manages a small team of professionals responsible for the planning, development and administration of Schwab Charitable’s risk management and regulatory compliance programs. The role helps promote business growth and operational efficiency through effective risk management and corporate governance structures in accordance with applicable law and best practices.


The successful candidate will:

  • Be a trusted partner that provides, manages, monitors, and applies practical, consistent, effective, and unbiased risk and compliance management and guidance that is grounded in a deep understanding of business goals and risks as well as the regulatory and industry environment.
  • Develop actionable proposals and recommendations to senior management and the board in both written and verbal form and drive implementation of key risk management and compliance initiatives.
  • Work across multiple organizations to drive change and buy-in by working with and influencing key business partners by building effective working relationships.
  • Successfully manage complex projects, maintaining accurate records of decisions, tracking and following up on those decisions, and be able to proactively and independently move projects forward.



Primary responsibilities of the role include the management of:


  • Enterprise Risk Management and the support of Operational Risk Management:
    • Oversee development/improvement of a strategic framework to better identify, assess and build awareness of existing and emerging risks.
    • Oversee development/continuous improvement a process to identify, analyze and report key themes and trends with regard to issues and risk events/losses across the organization.
    • Partner with Charles Schwab & Co. and lever its risk management program including AML, OFAC, CVRC, FINRA Compliance and other appropriate elements.
    • Manage an overall Policy Program which adheres to applicable rules and regulations and provide educational programs.
    • Oversee regular compliance plan and reporting to evaluate compliance preparations, policies and user access controls. Ensure compliance programs are functioning as designed and recommend changes as needed.
    • Support and further develop the program that allows first line representatives to efficiently certify proper oversight and controls for identified risks.
    • Own and manage a process that efficiently results in retrospective reviews of operational risk (Quarterly Plan of Controls and Risk Reviews).
    • Support operational escalations or accommodation requests.
    • Continue to mature a Business Continuity Plan in conjunction with Charles Schwab, including scenario planning, table top exercises, and management of situations as they arise.  
  • Management of Compliance & Legal. Legal responsibilities include:
    • Monitor and advise on changing rules, regulations and the regulatory environment and ensure that employees are knowledgeable of a compliant with pertinent standards.
    • Ensure the Compliance Plan is within rules and regulations and support the business when questions arise.
    • Recommend appropriate revisions to new or existing policies, procedures and systems to reduce the frequency of future legal and compliance concerns.
    • Prepare and review legal documents and agreements including vendor management.
    • Provide regulatory and legal advice on applicable federal and state rules and regulations, engaging outside and Schwab legal counsel as appropriate.
    • Manage legal inquiries or litigation as needed.

What you have

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • 10-15+ years of related work experience in risk management and compliance with significant management experience.
  • Deep knowledge of the legal, compliance, and regulatory aspects of the financial services industry. Understanding of registered investment advisors and of risk management concepts, structures and processes.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills- sets and shares goals with high expectations, motivates performance, leads by example.
  • Well-developed influencing and collaboration skills.
  • Experience analyzing data and preparing solutions based on sound facts and findings.
  • Self-motivated, with strong attention to detail and ability to work independently and drive change.
  • Ability to work and lead multiple projects simultaneously while prioritizing based on risk/business needs.

  • Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills; demonstrated presentation skills.
